Knowing More About a VoIP System

VoIP which is an acronym standing for Voice over Internet Protocol refers to system of making telephone calls via the internet. In this method, voice data is sent just as one does with a normal email and the voice data is usually sent in separate packets each of which is coded differently so as to be sent to different destinations. At the end of their destination, the packets are reassembled in a predetermined sequence to enable a smooth a continuous flow of voice data and its accompanying text being received simultaneously.

Through improved technology, VoIP gateways can be combined with conventional Private Branch exchange (PBX) functionality that allows organizations to use a controlled intranet in the quest to cut down excess expenditure in carrying out long distance calls. VoIP PBX then becomes a superb single network that enables the rapid transfer of both voice calls and at the same time simultaneously transferring dataat reduced costs by incorporating advanced CTI features.

Currently a VoIP PBX system is available as a hardware object or can come in the form of an application software system that you need to install over your computer system in order to access such services. In order to make easier management of calls by routing them to and from a subscriber’s current telephony system, the VoIP PBX‘s equipment, services and servers are managed to form a system technically referred to as hosted VoIP. However, hosted VoIP is commonly referred to as managed VoIP and therefore the two terms hosted VoIP and Managed VoIP can be used interchangeably. Such a system has been proven to save companies needless costs of having to use a lot of funds in the management of the system besides reducing much dependence on VoIP equipment.

The core component of a VoIP PBX system is its SIP PBX server. The SIP PBX server which is also referred to as a SIP Proxy or Registrar is designed to deal with the setup of all SIP calls within the network. The SIP PBX is specifically primed to handle call setup and call tear down and is not responsible in any way for the transmission and receiving of any audio signals. Instead, the transmission and receiving of audio is done by another system called the media server which operates in RTP.  Traditionally, all VoIP solutions employed the use circuit-switched telephony as in the case with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) as opposed to the modern hosted VoIP services which employ the use of Packet-switched telephony to transmit calls over the internet. However, some hosted VoIP calls made by a subscriber are occasionally routed over the PSTN and directed to the hosted VoIP PBX system.

It is important to note that the area of VoIP technology is an area that is rapidly evolving with time. This area has seen an epic transformation and has totally changed the face of communication. In the year 2004, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that VoIP communication just as instant messaging and e-mail sending from computer to computer was to be free of government regulation. However, the FCC did not give any ruling concerning voice data sent from a computer to a regular telephone. With time, such services will gain great popularity and greatly increase the ease for communication at greatly reduced prices.
